Listen as Birdman chats with Ron McArthur, CEO of Summit Healthcare and Keith Cannon, Medical Director of Mayo Clinic about the addition of Summit to the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

This brings better care and attention to Summit patients with no additional cost.

December 7, 2016 -- SHOW LOW, Ariz. — Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center and Mayo Clinic announced today that Summit Healthcare has joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a growing network of organizations committed to working together in the best interests of their patients.

Summit Healthcare remains independent, but as a member of the network, it has access to Mayo Clinic knowledge and resources to complement its expertise and enhance its local care. Physicians at Summit Healthcare and Mayo Clinic can collaborate – with no additional charge to patients – so that more patients can receive their care close to home while gaining additional peace of mind.

This Episode of Summit Cares Birdman talks to Dawn Marino RN and Julie Jackson RN about the Cardiac Pulmonary Rehabilitation and how it helps patients to recover and live better lives.

Help people who have a history of or are at risk for heart disease (cardiovascular disease) or are living with lung disease (pulmonary disease). People with heart disease can improve their health and reduce their risk of future cardiovascular disease, medical complications, and future hospitalizations. People with lung disease can learn to manage their disease well and reduce the risk of hospitalization.  The programs offered are designed to support a patient’s physical, emotional and social needs and include support for their families.

Summit Healthcare CardioPulmonary Rehabilitation programs serve Northeastern Arizona and use the guidelines of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. These programs include a specialized plan of care developed by our team of experienced, advanced life support certified, registered nurses and licensed respiratory therapists.

In the CardioPulmonary Rehabilitation Services department, cardiologists and pulmonologists work with a multidisciplinary team to manage your care. The team may include:

  • Registered Nurses
  • Respiratory Therapists
  • Nurse Educator
  • Pharmacist
  • Registered Dieticians/Diabetic Educators
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Social Worker
  • Medical Technician

Programs offered by Summit Healthcare CardioPulmonary Rehabilitation:

INPATIENT PROGRAM INTRODUCTION

Hospitalized patients receive a personal visit from one of our staff to explain the rehabilitation programs, their benefits, and how to get involved. Medicare and most other insurances cover the program for specific conditions.

PHASE II PROGRAMS

On your first visit a registered nurse or licensed respiratory therapist does an evaluation. Patients receive a six (6) minute walking or seated exercise test to assess fitness.  Together the patient and staff make a personalized plan of care that includes exercise and learning. This plan is updated throughout the program.  The program lasts up to 36 sessions of exercise and education.  Patients get a wide variety of classes about how to manage their disease including: managing stress; proper medication use; how to shop, cook, and eat healthy; how to relax for better heart and lung function; how to manage heart and lung emergencies; how to manage weight loss; understanding asthma, emphysema, and COPD; and how to do daily activity without getting too worn out.

CARDIAC PROGRAM

Designed for people who have suffered a heart attack, coronary bypass (CABG), heart valve replacement, coronary stent, heart failure, or have stable angina. The program requires a healthcare provider’s referral.  Surgical notes, an EKG, and and echocardiogram (if available) should be sent with the order.  Monitoring during exercise sessions includes continuous telemetry (heart monitoring), periodic oximetry (oxygen measurements), and blood pressure checks.  At the end of 36 sessions, patients will have a better understanding of heart problems and how to keep themselves in the best possible health.

PULMONARY PROGRAM

Is designed for people suffering with lung problems from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) including: bronchiectasis, chronic persistent asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and emphysema.  The program requires a health care provider’s referral, and the results of a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) should be sent with the order.  Each session of monitored exercise includes periodic oximetry (oxygen measurements), and blood pressure checks.  Sessions also include staff instruction on use and cleaning of home equipment, oxygen use, and proper use of an inhaler.  Patients’ are taught “pursed lip breathing” to help them feel less winded.  At the end of 36 sessions, clients will have a better understanding of lung problems and how to keep themselves in the best possible health.

COMMUNITY HEALTH AND FITNESS MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

Is for patients who have completed Phase II and for members of the community who want to exercise in a group setting with nurses available.  This maintenance program is for independent exercise.  Blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen checks are available on request.  This is usually not covered by insurance (clients are self pay).

The CAPD (Cardiac and Pulmonary Discussion) group meets weekly to talk about ways of dealing with chronic heart and lung disease.  This casual meeting lets patients meet others with problems like theirs.  Spouse or one support person is welcome. It creates a support network for patients and family members. MEETINGS ARE FREE OF CHARGE.

This Episode Birdman chat with Lisa Horne about Route 66 White Mountain Geo Tour Grande Final Event.

Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Presents

Free Grand Finale Event to the Public

SHOW LOW, ARIZONA— The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour is hosting a free event to the public on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., at the Round Valley Dome in Eagar. Enjoy live music from Strange Brew, Planting Seedz, Fools Hollow Band and a live remote broadcast from Power 95.7. There will be a Kids’ Zone with a bounce house, rock wall and more! Plus, visit local booths from arts, crafts, food and market vendors.

This free event is a culminating celebration of the Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour, a geocaching initiative to introduce desert dwellers, geocachers and tourists to OUR Arizona. But you need not be an out-of-towner to participate. Bring your passport with geocaches you have found from our GeoTour, and get an extra 20 points just for attending the Grand Finale Event! Each completed passport with at least 40 points will earn an official Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour trackable GeoCoin. Your completed passport will also be entered into a raffle drawing for an array of great prizes such as GPS devices, gift certificates and more!

Northeastern Arizona is a recreational gold mine. OUR Arizona is where outdoor enthusiasts experience the best of fishing, hunting, off-roading, skiing, tubing, sledding, camping and geocaching. OUR Arizona is a higher-elevation treasure trove full of history and Old West lore, encompassing the communities of Eagar, Navajo County, Pinetop-Lakeside, Show Low, Snowflake, Springerville, St. Johns, Taylor and Winslow. Arizona is known for its desert climate, cactus, hot summers and mild winters, but OUR Arizona is a unique contradiction.

What is Geocaching:

Geocaching is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online.

What is a GeoTour:

GeoTours are a series of geocaches tied together by a common theme, such as the history, recreation or points of interest of a given area or region. There is no fixed itinerary, like on a traditional trail, but rather a series of points of interest in a self-guided, goal-oriented plan.

What is the Route 66 GeoTour Passport:

The Official Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Passport functions as a logbook for you to track your progress as you hunt specially placed geocaches along the tour. This passport lets you record “special codes” from the geocaches you find in order to qualify for the Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Special Edition GeoCoin. Earn extra cache dash points if you stay or eat at our participating sponsor lodgers and restaurants. Earn 20 points on your passport just for attending the GeoTour Grand Finale event!

What is a GeoCoin:

The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour GeoCoin is a uniquely designed coin created to reward geocachers who complete our GeoTour Passport by collecting points for finding specific geocaches, as well as dining and lodging with our sponsors. Each GeoCoin is trackable on www.geocaching.com

Northeastern Arizona is a recreational gold mine. Fishing, hunting, off-roading, skiing, tubing, sledding, camping, and geocaching are plentiful throughout OUR Arizona! The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour brings our communities together to showcase all of this and more so that you can explore northeastern Arizona's small-town charm combined with great geocaching. Join us for an excellent sampling of the sights, sounds and experiences that make this expansive region special, and for the unique opportunity of a one-of-a-kind road trip and adventure that will be sure to have you coming back again and again! Welcome to OUR Arizona!

2016 Candidates - Gene Kelley - Show Low City Council

Below is the email that was sent to each inviting them to come in for an interview.

Greetings,

My Name is Rob Hephner and I am responsible for the BIRDMAN ON THE MOUNTAIN Podcast that reaches many of the Mountain’s residents weekly.

I strive to provide detailed and trustworthy information regarding community events and activities and for this reason I am offering each and every individual running for office in Pinetop-Lakeside the ability to discuss their vision and position on town issues.

Each interview will be held separately and will focus on the individual, please no discussing about others running, just yourself.

I will have 5 specific question that will be asked during each interview, but you are certainly able to talk about others as well.

I would like to make these interviews available as soon as possible since ballots will be in peoples hands very soon.

Please either call, text or email me and I can set up your interview ASAP.

The 5 questions will be as follows.

1 - What is your vision for the City of Show Low?

2 - Do you feel that the citizens have been disconnected from the City Council at all?

3 - What do you believe should be done to maintain Show Low as a great place to live?

4 - What do you believe will be the biggest challenge to Show Low in the coming years?

5 - How would you help to make Show Low even more business friendly?

All interviews will be conducted 1-on-1 in the Birdman Media Studio located at 518 W White Mountain Blvd

Lakeside AZ 85929.

All interviews will run in real time without interruption or editing after.

There are no “gotcha” questions planned, however there may be questions that are asked based upon an answer to the original 5 questions.

Candidates will be limited to discuss their own views and not those of others, either positive or negative.

All interviews are Audio Recordings, I will make a short video of your speaking for an overview video to promote all of the podcasts.

I look forward to delivering your message to the voters and hope you have a blessed day,

Rob Hephner

Explanation of Permanent Base Option, Ballot Proposition 407

Here is an informational flyer for Show Low voters regarding Proposition 407 (a city proposition appearing on the August 30 primary election ballot). It asks voters to consider a permanent adjustment to the state-imposed spending limit, which was established in 1980 based on Show Low’s 1980 expenditures and 1978 population figures. This adjustment is very similar to the Home Rule option that gives the Council local control of the city’s finances. And, like the Home Rule option, there is no impact to the city’s existing taxes or revenues. The difference is that instead of voting for a temporary Home Rule adjustment every four years, the permanent base option would mean not having another Home Rule election for another 20, 30, or more years. Read the complete flyer at http://showlowaz.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1432

Rules and Format:

  • Each candidate will be given two minutes to provide an opening statement and closing remarks.  The order of responses has been predetermined.
  • After the opening statement we will move to the questioning portion of the debate.  At that point the first person called upon will have 2 minutes to answer the question; all others will have 1 minute to respond.  Again the order of responses has been randomly predetermined.
  • JoAnne Guderian will serve as our timekeeper.   Intro JoAnne…..  JoAnne will have signs to signal the candidates at 30 seconds, 15 seconds and STOP
  • We may add a “lightening round” (time permitting) in which candidates will answer YES or NO – this will be a fast-paced round with no explanations allowed.
  • At the end of the question period, (approximately 1:20pm) we will move into the final statements from each candidate.  Again we will have a 2-minute limit on those.  This order has also been predetermined.

     Question # 1 and Opening Remarks – 2min each

As part of your opening remarks please introduce yourself to us and share why you are running for Congressional District 1.

THIS BEGINS THE QUESTIONING PORTION ALLOWING 2 MIN FOR THE FIRST PERSON AND 1 MIN FOR ALL OTHERS

Question # 2

Immigration reform seems to be taking front stage again in light of Britain leaving the European Union, in part because of the forced open border requirements and the overall immigration laws in the union. What are your thoughts on borders and immigration reform?

Question # 3

How do you intend to control and/or eliminate Federal Government overreach into business’s ability to manage their workplace?

Question # 4

What is the federal government’s role in education curriculum, funding and standards? And what will you champion here?

Question # 5

On June 12th, Omar Mateen, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.  It was labeled terrorist attack/hate crime. It was the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter, the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in U.S. history, and the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since September 11th.

More recently

On July 7th, Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed and fired upon a group of police officers in Dallas, Texas, killing five officers and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also wounded.

In light of incidents like these, what is your position on our 2nd amendment rights and gun control?

Question # 10

Question #11

Knowing what you know about our region of this great State, what do you see as the most important issues we face and what will you do to assist with those issues?

Bands and Brews is slated to be a new segment for BIRDMAN ON THE MOUNTAIN and will cover exactly what it states, Bands and Brews.

In this introductory segment Birdman chats with Jacob Forney from Black Horse Brewery about his approach to beer making, how the Brewery got its name and other things most fans might find of interest.

The Black Horse Brewery opened in Show Low,  Arizona in May 2015.  Although newly opened, we have been brewing, testing and tasting for over 30 years.

Black Horse Brewery is a family owned and operated Micro Brewery creating and brewing high quality products for the craft beer fan. From brews inspired by old German recipes to modern and unique blends, our beer is always crafted with all-grain, all-natural ingredients for a full flavored taste.

Black Horse Brewery is owned and operated by Ralph Forney, Brewmaster, Jacob Forney, Brewmaster and Marketing, and Julie Forney, Secretary/Pub Cheese maker/Beertender.

Stop into our Hole in the Wall Tap Room, or request a Black Horse Brewery craft beer at your favorite restaurant or saloon.

P.S.  Yes, we do love horses, but actually the name of our brewery is based on Ralph's many years of service in the United States Army as a member of  the Black Horse Regiment!

From the Bands Website

The Pistoleros started out as Mill Avenue mainstays, The Chimeras. The legendary Doug Hopkins - formerly of the Gin Blossoms - formed the group with Mark and Lawrence Zubia, Scott Andrews and Mark Riggs. The Chimeras quickly exploded on the local scene, but Riggs and Hopkins departed the group soon after.
Ultimately, Gary Smith and Thomas Laufenberg replaced Hopkins and Riggs and the crew forged onward landing a major label deal with Hollywood Records. Changing its moniker to The Pistoleros, the group released its Hollywood effort, "Hang on to Nothing", which included "My Guardian Angel", written by Hopkins and Mark Zubia. "Hang on to Nothing" also featured songwriting collaborations with The Jayhawks' Gary Louris and Mark Perlman, Radney Foster and The Smithereens' Pat DiNizio.

The Pistoleros furthered their recorded legacy with a self-titled effort which included co-writes with Jesse Valenzuela of the Gin Blossoms and producer Marty Frederickson.
In 2002, the band marked its 10th anniversary with the concert collection "Bars and Guitars". In 2012, to celebrate 20 years together, they re-released their first recording, "Mistaken for Granted".

Recently, Pistoleros released their Fervor Records debut,"Shine".

From the Bands website.

Tramps & Thieves has been called: “A Country Folk Rock band with an Outlaw Hippie Attitude.” The band consists of dual lead singer-guitarists J. Scott Howard and Emmett DeGuvera, bassist Nolan McKelvey, and drummer Scott B. Seymann.

With its unique Southwestern sound, Tramps & Thieves has been a cherished staple in the Arizona music scene since 2001. The band recently released its fourth independent album, Galloping Hearts, which is a follow-up to its previous three albums, Mill Avenue Cowboys, Spittin’ Into the Wind, and Perennials. (Go to our MERCH page to purchase.)

Tramps & Thieves continues to play to packed audiences around the Valley of the Sun and statewide, including shows with Jason Isbell, Shurman, Dead Hot Workshop, Ghetto Cowgirl, The Pistoleros, and Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers. Tramps & Thieves returned home from its first tour of Germany in October 2015, and has plans to go back overseas to continue growing its international fan base.

Tramps & Thieves remains one of the few Arizona bands to release authentic, independent, original music, fusing Rock ‘n’ roll with Alternative, Folk, Americana and Country music. Taking its name from the hit song, “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves,” the band counts Tom Petty, The Black Crowes, The Jayhawks, Waylon Jennings, The Band, Wilco, and others as its influences. If their music sounds familiar, you might have heard their hit “Porcupine Jacket” in the 2008 teen comedy major motion picture, Sex Drive. Also, keep an ear out for their music to be included in the upcoming film, Battlecreek, directed by Alison Eastwood.

Although they’re based in Tempe, AZ, Tramps & Thieves is a band committed to making its way to as many people and places as possible. You can find their music on iTunes, CDBaby.com, Reverbnation.com, and Spotify, and you can follow them on social media at www.facebook.com/trampsandthieves/ and www.twitter.com/TrampsThieves.

By far and away the best way to experience this band is where they are most comfortable, on stage, so make the time to get out and support live music!

From The Chamber

Yesterdays luncheon featured the majority of men and women who are running for an elected office (Rim Country) in the upcoming elections. What did we learn ? We learned that every single one of the people who made time to be with us absolutely loves this county, these towns and its people. We learned that we fellow Gila county residents should be thankful that people like them live among us and we should find inspiration in their actions. These are not career politicians even though a few have been repeatedly elected to office. They are all business people, teachers, officers of the law, servicemen, book keepers, mothers, fathers and friends first. They don't make a living by being elected (ok technically the sheriff and possibly the supervisors but they aren't in it for the money) these are real people who care about Rim Country and their fellow citizens so much they're willing and wanting to do something to improve it. It's too bad we can't support them all.

In no particular Order, here are the Candidates that spoke -

Current Payson Mayor Kenny Evans running for District Supervisor

Former Payson Mayor and current TOP Mayoral Candidate

Current Town of Payson Vice Mayor and TOP Mayoral Candidate Michael Hughes

Current Start Valley Councilman and Candidate for re-election Gary Coon

Drew Cooper is a born entertainer in the mold of Garth Brooks, Chris Ledoux and Bruce Springsteen, whose music and live performance styles were his companions and musical influences while he grew up. Drew was then drawn in his early twenties to the Red Dirt scene by the likes of Radney Foster, Stoney LaRue, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Pat Green, who have all inspired the country and bluesy, toe-tapping, sing-along, heartfelt music he plays today.

Drew is one of those rare performers who can turn anyone who attends one of his concerts into a lifelong fan. Drew’s charismatic, smiling, laughing style of entertaining can turn crowds of 12 to 12,000 into enthusiastic, on-your-feet participants in a musical journey that excites and moves people of all ages and backgrounds.

Drew’s music shows the commitment to country values and strong family bonds he was raised with while growing up in the Midwest, as well as the distinctive influence of the American Southwest, where he now calls home. From Springfield, Illinois to Tucson, Arizona, Drew’s down-home, back-roads lyrics and keep-humming-that-tune melodies embody all that is good about the Great American Heartland.

A self-taught guitar player whose fingertip blisters were the dues many great performers pay, he is known by several names – son, brother, and most importantly, Daddy. But you will know him simply as Drew Cooper, a musician whose heart is in his smile and his relentless love of music comes through in every chord he plays.

Drew may be new to the Red Dirt scene, but he is already cutting his own path, opening for national acts such as Toby Keith, Dwight Yoakam, Phil Vassar, Dustin Lynch, Cody Johnson and Pat Green and constantly adding to his fan base. Drew has played festivals and major venues, but still loves performing in local dive bars like the Cowpony in Tucson where he played his first show. His passion for music comes through in the lyrics to his hit song, “Pictures on the Wall.” With the release of his new EP “Hangovers and Heartaches,” Drew is proving that his feet are firmly planted in good old American musical topsoil – the richest performance tradition in the greatest country on earth.

CODY LYNN MACY - LEAD VOCALS

From the time Cody Lynn Macy could walk and talk, she has been entertaining audiences. She is an Arizona native and despite all of the traveling she has done in her life, she knows it is where her roots will always lie. Cody recorded her first album in Texas at the age of 9 and her second in Nashville at 12. She graduated high school at age 14 and had her AAS in Music Business by 2006. Throughout her life, Cody has spent a lot of time on the road fronting her own bands and performing as much as she could. She has performed multiple times at Country Thunder, both in Arizona and Wisconsin, and has opened for the likes of Charlie Daniels, Martina McBride, and Neal McCoy. She also records and performs with popular KLME radio hosts Tim and Willy and their All Earl Band. Even with her past accomplishments, Desert Dixie has given Cody Lynn a new and exciting way to flex her creative muscles and an outlet to really show her musical chops.

J.T. HUBBELL - LEAD VOCALS, GUITAR

A proud Arizona native, J.T. was raised in a family where get-togethers often began and ended with everyone singing around a piano or guitar. It wasn’t until age 16 that he really pursued a musical path though. At the age of 19, J.T. packed his bags and took off for Nashville to learn about the craft of songwriting. Soon he was playing songwriter nights and showcases with some of the musicians he grew up admiring. J.T. learned not only how to write better songs and how to be a better player, but also how to truly entertain an audience while in Nashville. After the short time in Music City, J.T. stayed busy during college playing around Arizona as a solo act as well as with bands. Then, of course, he connected with Cody Lynn and eventually pursued Desert Dixie full force. J.T. was a finalist in the Young Guns contest held at Arizona's Country Thunder in 2004 and is a regular featured artist on the internet radio station www.toginet.com.

From Reverb Nation

Hailing from the American southwest, American Longspurs deliver their brand of country rock from the sweltering streets of Phoenix, Arizona. Formed by childhood friends and lifelong musical partners Zachary Zimmerman and Drew Switzer, American Longspurs evoke the sounds of yesterday's outlaw country legends Waylon Jennings and Johnny Paycheck while drawing comparisons to today's Americana superstars such as Drive-By Truckers and Ryan Bingham. With Chester Carmer, Nick Pawlowski and John Churchill rounding out the band in 2014 the Longspurs hit the stage hard including an appearance at the Country Thunder music festival alongside Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry, Easton Corbin and more. The year was highlighted, however, by the release of their sophomore EP Palo Santo. "While many artists seem to pay lip service to respecting classic country music, that’s not always evident in their sound. Fortunately, that’s not the case with American Longspurs. Frequently plain-spoken, sometimes poetic, Palo Santo provides a soundtrack for wanderers" (Carolyn Dixon, Goodnight Hestia). Proving there is indeed no rest for the wicked, American Longspurs kicked off 2015 with the release of their latest single Whiskey Feelin' which is available now on all major online music stores and streaming applications. The boys are currently hard at work writing and recording new material for a follow-up release expected out late 2015.

Roger Naylor - AZ Author and just a Great Guy

From Roger's Page

Howdy!
I am a travel write who hates to travel.

At least anywhere beyond the Southwest. I knew Arizona was where I belonged soon as I arrived as a wide-eyed college student. I fell in love with the immense beast of sky, the mountains that prop it up and much to my surprise, the stark desert that scratches it with spiny fingers. I spend my days rambling around this beguiling, bewitching landscape—hiking, camping, exploring, eating, and hiking a little more. Then I write about it all.

Yes, it’s the coolest job in the world. No, you can’t have it.

If you want to ride along on my travels around this beautiful region, be sure to Like me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter. That’s where I post all my latest news, stories and adventures.

My third book is here!

Boots & Burgers: An Arizona Handbook for Hungry Hikers can be purchased along with my other books right here. Just click the Store button at the top.

Beyond trail descriptions and restaurant info, I provide suggestions for other local attractions and activities. I add historic tidbits, fast facts, rambling thoughts, personal anecdotes and big dollops of quirkiness. When you spend as much alone time on the trail as I do, all sorts of weird notions ricochet through the old noggin.

Most of all it’s packed with great days, amazing days, my best days. Peel off a few for yourself. Lace up the boots and explore the scenic wonders of this epic landscape. Then unwind in a comfortable hideout, where burgers leap off the grill like trout from a stream.

Want fries with that?

The Green Line on the Map is explained at 16:54 in the recording. It is called the Contingency Line.

*****6/18/2016 at 8:40 am***** Fire lines continued to hold during the night and backburning was successful . Fire crews are continuing to solidify the E and SE sections of the fire. Winds are expected to be 10-15 mph and temperatures will be higher today. The fire is 30% contained and we remain under pre-evacuation orders only at this time. Next update at 12:30pm

Briefing with Governor Doug Ducey and Incident Command and Local Officials.

Cedar Fire Update

June 17, 2016

Location: South of Show Low, East of Highway 60 on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation
Start date: Wednesday, June 15, 2016
Size: Approximately 9,652 acres
Percent Contained: 0%
Cause: Unknown/Under Investigation
Resources Assigned: Approximately 600 personnel

The Bureau of Indian Affairs and the White Mountain Apache Tribe brought in John Pierson's Type 1 Incident Management Team to assume command of the Cedar Fire at 6:00pm on Thursday, June 16. The public can continue to get information on the Cedar Fire by calling the 311 Northeastern Arizona Public Information System at 928-333- 3412. Official incident information will be posted online at the Cedar Fire InciWeb page (http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4788) and the Cedar Fire Information Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cedarfireinfo).

Fire crews made good progress yesterday and continued to work throughout the night. Crews successfully conducted burnout operations along the B41 road to establish an eastern containment line. Crews also strengthened western containment lines along Highway 60 and northern containment lines ¼ mile from the B65 road. An infrared flight mapped the current fire size at 9,652 acres, approximately 8.3 miles south of Pinetop-Lakeside and 11.4 miles south of Show Low. The fire is moving in a northeast direction, influenced by wind, topography and fuels. Much of the current operational success is due to the hard work and efforts of the initial attack resources and their foresight in ordering the Type 3 Team until the Type 1 Team could assume command.

US Highway 60 is closed eastbound and westbound from mile post 318 at State Route 73 to mile post 337 at Show Low. Evacuation orders remain in place for the community of Forestdale. Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside and the immediate surrounding areas are under pre-evacuation notice. To receive emergency alerts, please register through Ready Navajo County at https://member.everbridge.net/index/453003085612436#/login.

Today’s weather forecast calls for warmer temperatures with lighter winds. Fire managers are expecting the weather to get hotter and drier with decreasing winds over the next several days. Smoke will continue to move northeast and will likely impact the areas around Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, and Snowflake-Taylor.

6/16/16 5:00 pm – Members of various response agencies gave a briefing at tonight’s press conference. The Type 1 incident management team took over command of the fire today and will continue the hard work and efforts of the responders already on scene.

The winds today did not negatively impact the fire as previously anticipated which allowed for crews to hold lines. Air assets will continue to aid in battling this fire until 1900. Law enforcement agencies from all over Navajo, Apache and Coconino County as well the state have responded to this incident to aid with protection of our communities, securing roads and thoroughfares and being ready to conduct evacuation operations if necessary. Winds are not predicted to be as severe tomorrow, this however could increase smoke impacts in the area.

The fire is currently burning 5,200 acres. The total scorched area is 8,000 due to control burns to battle the fire.

Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside and McNary are still on pre-evacuation warnings. The fire is between ½ and ¼ mile from the trigger point for evacuation. However, no evacuations have been issued for these communities.

If residents are evacuated, they will be provided with green and orange tags. If residents leave, we ask that they prominently display their green tags to know the house is clear. If they stay, please display the orange tag.

  • If residents choose to stay during an evacuation, they will not be allowed to leave their property.
