In this episode, Birdman chats with Chief Joe Shelley about Road Safety. Please slow down in wet, snowy weather. Electronic devices cause 10x more distraction, even hands free. This month is DUI enforcement month in the entire state of Arizona, until January 2nd. Driving with a buzz is still considered drunk driving. Play it safe and be smart by preventing, don't take the risk. Please have a designated driver or call Safe Ride, there are other options than driving under the influence (does not only apply to alcohol). Think, be smart, be safe.

Birdman on the Mountain podcast – July 19, 2018 (regarding city elections)Rob: (Guests: City Clerk Ann Kurasaki, Deputy City Clerk Tamra Reidhead, Planning and Zoning Director Justen Tregaskes)
I understand you have information to share with our viewers about the upcoming city elections this fall. Ann:
Tamra:
Ann:
Rob: Can you explain the ballot proposition and tell us more about the General Plan? Justen:
Rob: How can voters learn more about the ballot proposition? Justen:
Rob: Will the city have a general election in November? Ann: ∙ It depends on what happens at the primary. ∙ For candidates, anyone who receives more than 50% of the vote for the office of Council member is considered elected. If all 3 seats are not filled at the primary, a general election on November 6 will be held for the remaining seats. ∙ The ballot proposition for adopting the new General Plan will be decided at the primary. Rob: Is there still time to register to vote in the primary? Tamra: ∙ July 30 is the last day to register to vote in the August 28 primary. ∙ October 8 is the last day to register to vote in the November 6 general. ∙ Voters who have moved to a different physical address, changed their names because of marriage or divorce or want to change their party designation must re-register to vote. ∙ Voter registration forms are available in the lobby at city hall. Rob: Are there any other key dates our voters should be aware of? Tamra: ∙ Early ballots will be mailed to the voters by Navajo County beginning August 1. Voters have until August 17 to request an early ballot by calling (800) 668-3867. ∙ The last date we suggest mailing back a voted ballot is Friday, August 24, to make sure it’s received by the county by the August 28 election. ∙ Or voters can drop off a voted ballot at any polling place in Navajo County on election day. All polling places will stay open until 7 p.m. ∙ If there is a general election, the date is November 6. Rob: How can our voters learn more about our candidates? Ann:

Recorded in the Hertiage Room at the Show Low City Hall. Jay Brimhall and Officer Roby join share information about the upcoming 4th of July holiday. JOIN US FOR SHOW LOW’S Celebrate our nation’s birthday on Wednesday, July 4, through the City of Show Low’s family-friendly signature events — the annual parade in the morning, a wet zone to follow and FreedomFest in the afternoon. Find your spot for the annual parade, which begins at 9 a.m. along the Deuce of Clubs, traveling eastbound from Owens and turning south on White Mountain Road to Hall Street. This year’s parade theme is “Heroes, History and Honor,” with decorated war veteran and local resident Tom Judd, Senior Vice Commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, leading the parade as grand marshal. Expect road closures and detours during the parade. The Deuce of Clubs (US 60) will be closed between Whipple Road and S. White Mountain Road (SR 260) from 8:45 until approximately 11:30 a.m., with eastbound and westbound detours established. The eastbound detour begins at the Deuce of Clubs and Whipple Road intersection, with the Deuce of Clubs closing to traffic at this location. Traffic will be routed to Whipple Road to Central Avenue and south on Woolford Road to S. White Mountain Road, where the White Mountain Entertainment Show Low 5 movie theaters are located. Westbound traffic on the Deuce of Clubs will be routed south on S. White Mountain Road to Woolford Road and return to the Deuce of Clubs via Whipple. Following the end of the parade, the city will provide a “wet zone” at no charge until 1:30 p.m. at Frontier Fields, 600 N. 9th Place. All ages who want to frolic among the sprinklers, cool off with a good soak from Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District’s fire truck or enjoy exciting water activities are invited to come and have fun. At 3 p.m., head over to the Show Low football stadium complex, 500 W. Old Linden Road, for the popular FreedomFest festivities — with free admission — planned to last well into the evening. Relish tasty fare, including Indian tacos, Mexican food, funnel cakes, kettle corn, pretzels, cotton candy, shaved ice, hand-crafted soda and other delectable treats. The Fun Zone will be in full swing from 3 to 8:30 p.m., featuring a double-lane mega slide, rock wall, wrecking ball, obstacle courses, bounce houses and much more. Unlimited ride wristbands are only $10 each. Live concerts begin at 3 p.m. with Fools Hollow Band, Edward at 4:15, Arizona Blacktop at 5:30, culminating with headliner, Sir Harrison Band, performing at 7:30 p.m. In addition, parade winners will be announced at 6:45 and, beginning at 7, the Show Low High School Choir will perform patriotic songs along with a flag-raising ceremony. The Fireworks show will more than likely be cancelled. Final decision will be made on Monday, July 2nd. In addition: Please be patient with others. Dogs need to be on a leash; if they are not good in crowds or around noise, please be smart and don't bring your pet. Please do not double park over another person. Leave enough space so that if you or another person has an emergency or needs to leave, they can get out of the space safely. We are still in Stage III Fire Restricitons: no smoking (unless you are in an enclosed building or vehicle), no fireworks, no sparklers, no charcoal grills (propane grill okay). Protect our mountain. Many people like to celebrate the 4th of July with adult beverages. Please be responsible, don't drink and drive, and if you're going to drive, don't drink. Everyone please have a SAFE and ENJOYABLE 4th of July!

And let’s all do our part to keep the City of Show Low beautiful! For more information, call 532- 4100. *~*~*~*~*~*~* Ready, Set, Go! designed to help us prepare for wild fires The White Mountains is known for being an outdoor paradise, with breathtaking scenery, spectacular wildlife, clean air and picture-postcard vistas. Despite our beautiful surroundings, wild fires are an inevitable act of nature given the area’s topography, tree densities and high-desert weather conditions. Wildfires are indiscriminate, burning what ever lies within their path. Consequently, it is important for those of us who live here to take whatever steps we can to reduce re danger and to protect ourselves in the event of an emergency. Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District has taken the lead, continuing a program launched in 2012 called Ready,Set, Go! (RSG). Ready, Set, Go! is designed to educate us on how to live in the wildland-urban interface and protect our homes and families. The “ready” concept teaches us to prepare our homes and properties well in advance of a wildland fire. Thee “set” concept elevates a family’s situational awareness—when re weather occurs or when wildland fires are burning—to monitor the enviroment and to be ready to evacuate. The "go" concept alerts us to implement a family disaster plan immdediately, by leaving well before the fire arrives. One facet of the RSG program is a property assessment. District personnel go door-to-door visiting homeowners, answering questions and conducting an assessment As we have learned from past experience, wild res are potentially an extremely serious threat in the White Mountains. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect one’s homes and families by making the necessary preparations. In the long run, it is less expensive to prevent wildfires than it is to deal with wild res and the devastation that follows them. For more information or to schedule a community presentation, call Community Risk Manager Kirk Webb at 368-6112.

Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Presents Free Grand Finale Event to the Public
SHOW LOW, ARIZONA— The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour is hosting a free event to the public on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., at the Round Valley Dome in Eagar. Enjoy live music from Strange Brew, Planting Seedz, Fools Hollow Band and a live remote broadcast from Power 95.7. There will be a Kids’ Zone with a bounce house, rock wall and more! Plus, visit local booths from arts, crafts, food and market vendors.
This free event is a culminating celebration of the Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour, a geocaching initiative to introduce desert dwellers, geocachers and tourists to OUR Arizona. But you need not be an out-of-towner to participate. Bring your passport with geocaches you have found from our GeoTour, and get an extra 20 points just for attending the Grand Finale Event! Each completed passport with at least 40 points will earn an official Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour trackable GeoCoin. Your completed passport will also be entered into a raffle drawing for an array of great prizes such as GPS devices, gift certificates and more!
Northeastern Arizona is a recreational gold mine. OUR Arizona is where outdoor enthusiasts experience the best of fishing, hunting, off-roading, skiing, tubing, sledding, camping and geocaching. OUR Arizona is a higher-elevation treasure trove full of history and Old West lore, encompassing the communities of Eagar, Navajo County, Pinetop-Lakeside, Show Low, Snowflake, Springerville, St. Johns, Taylor and Winslow. Arizona is known for its desert climate, cactus, hot summers and mild winters, but OUR Arizona is a unique contradiction.
What is Geocaching: Geocaching is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online.
What is a GeoTour: GeoTours are a series of geocaches tied together by a common theme, such as the history, recreation or points of interest of a given area or region. There is no fixed itinerary, like on a traditional trail, but rather a series of points of interest in a self-guided, goal-oriented plan.
What is the Route 66 GeoTour Passport: The Official Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Passport functions as a logbook for you to track your progress as you hunt specially placed geocaches along the tour. This passport lets you record “special codes” from the geocaches you find in order to qualify for the Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Special Edition GeoCoin. Earn extra cache dash points if you stay or eat at our participating sponsor lodgers and restaurants. Earn 20 points on your passport just for attending the GeoTour Grand Finale event!
What is a GeoCoin: The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour GeoCoin is a uniquely designed coin created to reward geocachers who complete our GeoTour Passport by collecting points for finding specific geocaches, as well as dining and lodging with our sponsors. Each GeoCoin is trackable on www.geocaching.com.
