This was a presentation held March 20, 2019 in Navajo County featuring Dr. Jill Stamm and Dominic Capello.

Childhood trauma is the root cause of almost every major challenge Navajo County faces: from the opioid crisis and violence, to low school achievement and underemployment.

Trauma is the result of adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, encompassing: physical and emotional neglect; physical, emotional and sexual abuse; and living in households where adults misuse substances, have mental health challenges, are violent to partners, parents are separated, or a family member is incarcerated. For both child and parent, this can mean hunger, homelessness and living in constant fear.

The more ACEs are endured, the more likely a child is to have emotional, educational and physical challenges. And every one of these challenges have negative financial implications for taxpayers.

Bands and Brews is slated to be a new segment for BIRDMAN ON THE MOUNTAIN and will cover exactly what it states, Bands and Brews.

In this introductory segment Birdman chats with Jacob Forney from Black Horse Brewery about his approach to beer making, how the Brewery got its name and other things most fans might find of interest.

The Black Horse Brewery opened in Show Low,  Arizona in May 2015.  Although newly opened, we have been brewing, testing and tasting for over 30 years.

Black Horse Brewery is a family owned and operated Micro Brewery creating and brewing high quality products for the craft beer fan. From brews inspired by old German recipes to modern and unique blends, our beer is always crafted with all-grain, all-natural ingredients for a full flavored taste.

Black Horse Brewery is owned and operated by Ralph Forney, Brewmaster, Jacob Forney, Brewmaster and Marketing, and Julie Forney, Secretary/Pub Cheese maker/Beertender.

Stop into our Hole in the Wall Tap Room, or request a Black Horse Brewery craft beer at your favorite restaurant or saloon.

P.S.  Yes, we do love horses, but actually the name of our brewery is based on Ralph's many years of service in the United States Army as a member of  the Black Horse Regiment!

Birdman sits down with Barbara Hatch after the Show Low Veterans Heritage Project book signing.

A Unique Model for the Enhancement of Education

Military history is the subject, but the skill sets developed by the students are much broader, more personal, and the experience is life altering.

The scope and sequence of VHP teaches high school students real work skills that will enhance their adult lives. Simultaneously, the veteran interviews have proven to be a major catalyst for personal and academic goal setting, as well as creating a passion to work for a social cause.

Skill Sets:

Interview Preparation and Research: Interview Preparation requires in-depth research. The students conduct an interview with a “stranger,” developing questions, creating a “personal” atmosphere, and listening attentively as each veteran tell his/her own story.
Writing and Editing: Students are required to develop writing and editing skills in order to create an essay that is professional quality for publication.
Business Planning: Students collaborate in developing and executing a business plan in preparation for publication of the book.
Personal Accountability: Specific goals are established, job responsibilities are created, and deadlines are monitored by the students themselves.
Public Speaking: In developing public speaking skills, students summarize their interviews and broader learning experience in a formal presentation to the veteran community at the year-end reception.

Bio for Barbara Hatch, Veterans Heritage Project (9/22/15)

After growing up in Illinois, Barbara’s teaching career took her to Senegal with the Peace Corps, Iran, and the U.S. Virgin Islands until finally landing in Phoenix after Hurricane Hugo.  Last year was her twelfth—and last— year at Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek, her 40th overall.  She retired to devote her energy to her nonprofit, Veterans Heritage Project, her husband, and her golf game!

In 2003 Salt River Project offered 5 grants to high school students to document local history.  Cactus Shadows students in the then-named Arizona Heritage Project archived the Cave Creek Christmas Pageant.  From 2004 to the present, over 900 students have listened to, recorded, and sent to the Veterans History Project the military service stories of over 1,050 veterans from World War II to Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan.  We are currently working on Volume 12.  We have expanded from one book to four!

Barbara’s students have been recognized by the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society, Military Order of the World Wars, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Rotary, Kiwanis, and the Arizona and National Council for the Social Studies.  She herself received the DAR’s Mary Smith Lockwood Medal for Education, the Copper Sword Award from Arizona Veterans’ Hall of Fame Society, and the Gilder Lehrman Arizona History Teacher of the Year for 2012.  She has also received the Patrick Henry Silver Star award from MOWW, Freedom Foundation’s George Washington Medal, Arizona Social Studies Teacher of the Year, and placed in the Top Ten Arizona Teachers of the Year.  None of this would be possible without her dedicated and patriotic students.

Barbara is excited to inform you her school club has grown to a 501© 3 that has expanded to 19 schools in Arizona and one outside Arizona—Marquette Catholic High School, her alma mater, in Alton, Illinois.  Veterans Heritage Project’s vision is to add more schools in Arizona and across the nation to connect students with military veterans through the patriotism of our youth, ensuring the preservation of the freedoms for which our veterans fought.

The Arizona Rural Development Council

The Arizona Rural Development Council (AZRDC) is a program of Local First Arizona Foundation, a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to building collaborative partnerships across community organizations, government, and the private sector for the benefit of all Arizona communities. AZRDC is working to enhance the vitality and capacity of rural communities by linking business and policy leaders and others who want to connect with the people, communities and resources in rural Arizona.

Website for AZ Regional Development

Local First Arizona First

Local First Arizona empowers individuals to build the life they want in their local community. Together we can create a stronger economy, a more vibrant community, and better job opportunities for Arizonans.

Local First Arizona´s goal is simple: Make Arizona a better place by supporting locally owned businesses and building vibrant communities that residents are proud to call home.

The Movement

Local First Arizona (LFA) is a statewide non-profit organization working to strengthen communities and local economies through growing, supporting, and celebrating locally owned businesses throughout the state of Arizona.

We educate consumers, stakeholders, business leaders, and policymakers about the significant economic, civic, and cultural benefits of strong local economies. We build vibrant communities that make residents proud to call Arizona home. And when people are proud of their hometown, they tend to care more, to volunteer more, to vote more, and give more. They even cheer a little louder when the home team wins!

The Mission

Local First Arizona seeks to promote, support, and celebrate a vibrant and sustainable Arizona economy by educating citizens about local business ownership, social equity, cultural diversity, environmental kinship, and collaboration.

The Issues

Consumers have grown leery of the false sense of savings promised by national chain stores and are becoming acutely aware of the homogenization of our communities. As a result, an explosion of sorts is occurring in Arizona and elsewhere as people look to define a sense of place, community, and quality of life for their families and their futures.

Studies have shown that money stays and re-circulates more often when spent at locally owned businesses. In addition, local businesses help increase home town pride which makes folks more connected to the place they live. And a recent Knight Foundation study showed “connection to place” as the single most leading indicator in places experiencing prosperity across a broad spectrum. At Local First Arizona, we want to build prosperity for all.
