In this episode Jacob Wilcock, Community Development Specialist talks about the 19th Annual Project Clean Sweep and Kirk Webb, Community Risk Manager talks about how to prevent wildfires.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The 19th annual Project Clean Sweep, the free citywide beautification program, kicks off in mid-May and continues into June.  Participation in the program is free to those presenting proof of residency either a City of Show Low utility bill showing current refuse service or a valid driver’s license listing a physical address within the city limits.

Commercial businesses are not eligible to participate in this program. Construction materials and hazardous materials (liquid paints, oils, pesticides, herbicides and household cleaning products) are strictly prohibited.

To accommodate our citizens, Project Clean Sweep is split into different weeks according to the following schedule:

* Monday, May 15–Saturday, May 20, and Monday, May 22–Saturday, May 27, for Green Waste Dumping, which allows you to drop off pine needles, tree limbs, grass clippings and organic materials for free at Dirty Deeds Green Waste, 890 Cinder Pit Road behind Perkins Cinders, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. including Saturday.  Do not mix in garbage, plastic, rocks, dirt, glass or other trash with the green waste.  You may also drop o wood products, including pallets, treated and untreated lumber, and painted and unpainted lumber.

* Monday, June 5 – Thursday, June 8 for Bulky Item Pickup, with city employees picking up any large unwanted appliances (empty refrigerators or freezers of all contents before placing at curbside), furniture, tires, etc.  Place the items in front of your residence by 7 a.m. on your regularly scheduled trash collection day.  For green waste, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of free dumping at Dirty Deeds. If you do put out green waste, branches and limbs must be less than 4 feet long and bundled.

* Monday, June 5 – Saturday, June 10 for Free Dumping at Lone Pine Transfer Station (o SR77).  The transfer station will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., including Saturday, but will not accept hazardous materials including pesticides, herbicides, oils, liquid paints, and household cleaning products; automobile batteries; and tires with or without rims. Materials from construction sites or commercial debris will be charged standard rates.

* For abandoned vehicles, call S&D Auto Wrecking at 537-7132 or Show Low Auto Sales at 537-2911 to make arrangements. ey will pay cash for inoperable vehicles, with or without a title, and will haul them away at no charge to you.

A flyer with more detailed information will be distributed with the May utility bill and posted to www.showlowaz.gov  Refuse customers that miss Project Clean Sweep can still take advantage of free excess trash collection (July 10 to 14, September 11 to 15 and November 6 to 10).  Please note, however, refrigerators and freezers cannot be accepted through this collection method.

Take advantage of this annual free program to make your property more attractive. And let’s all do our part to keep the City of Show Low beautiful! For more information, call 532- 4100.

Ready, Set, Go! designed to help us prepare for wild fires

The White Mountains is known for being an outdoor paradise, with breathtaking scenery, spectacular wildlife, clean air and picture-postcard vistas.  Despite our beautiful surroundings, wild fires are an inevitable act of nature given the area’s topography, tree densities and high-desert weather conditions.  Wildfires are indiscriminate, burning what ever lies within their path.  Consequently, it is important for those of us who live here to take whatever steps we can to reduce re danger and to protect ourselves in the event of an emergency.

Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District has taken the lead, continuing a program launched in 2012 called Ready,Set, Go! (RSG).  Ready, Set, Go! is designed to educate us on how to live in the wildland-urban interface and protect our homes and families.  The “ready” concept teaches us to prepare our homes and properties well in advance of a wildland fire.  Thee “set” concept elevates a family’s situational awareness—when re weather occurs or when wildland fires are burning—to monitor the enviroment and to be ready to evacuate.  The "go" concept alerts us to implement a family disaster plan immdediately, by leaving well before the fire arrives.

One facet of the RSG program is a property assessment.  District personnel go door-to-door visiting homeowners, answering questions and conducting an assessment
of the property to determine fire danger.  Another program component includes valuable information to assist individuals and families with emergency planning, which includes tips on creating an emergency kit (with essentials such as non-perishable food, water, medicine, clothing, hygiene items, etc.) and a step-by-step evacuation plan (should one ever be needed).  In addition, District staff make presentations to homeowners’ associations, neighborhood groups, community organizations and government entities, offering the same helpful advice and tools.

As we have learned from past experience, wild res are potentially an extremely serious threat in the White Mountains.  It is everyone’s responsibility to protect one’s homes and families by making the necessary preparations. In the long run, it is less expensive to prevent wildfires than it is to deal with wild res and the devastation that follows them.

For more information or to schedule a community presentation, call Community Risk Manager Kirk Webb at 368-6112.

Come join the City of Show Low at the Old Pavilion in Show Low City Park on May 13, 2017 at 9AM!

This year, our main project will be to enhance the features of our dog park! We will do several projects inside the dog park to include tree trimming, general debris removal, and the construction of a trail inside the dog park!

Depending on turnout, there will be other projects in the park for volunteers! Volunteers will be provided lunch! We ask that you bring rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, gloves, and hats!

If you have questions, please call Jay Brimhall at 928-532-4014

No preregistration necessary to participate, however registration helps us plan! The link to the right will take you to the www.justserve.org website where you can register!
